That's interesting...
I assume your using PS3 Media Server to copy the files. I've only used that to transfer files twice, and that was to copy 4GB+ movie files. But, it worked perfectly.
What model of PS3 do you have? What's your firmware? What version of PS3MS do you use?
I'd suggest using the 3.15 firmware(latest at this point) and the latest beta build of PS3MS if you have to use the network. USB is always an alternative as well.
There's also something called Red Kawa(?), that I believe is a file server for PS3. You could give that a try too.
