There are two common reasons for OPL crashing with new users.
One reason applies only to the old versions before the current public release of OPL v0.7.
All the older versions are 'allergic' to nearly all modchips, and will crash on such consoles.
The other reason is related to a speed-up trick of the USB core of OPL. (Not used for IDE core or SMB core)
It saves a lot of CPU time by not checking the FAT location of every sector in a game file.
Instead it makes that check only for the first sector of each file (so once per gigabyte), and assumes that all the other sectors will follow in ordered sequence. So if any game file is fragmented (not stored in contiguous sector sequence) then the game will crash there.
This also means that any USB HDD with damaged sectors may be rather useless with OPL. For USBAdvance it might work, as the sectors marked bad will never be allocated for files, but that can produce fragmentation that will crash OPL.
But the 'big thing' about OPL which no other game loader matches is that it can also launch games over LAN, with the game storage on the HDD of a PC or NAS unit instead of using any media dedicated to the PS2.
